Random Connections?

At the end of the session it felt as if we had travelled back in time and we all felt better for the experience.
We had all left “The Big Corporation” years back, some as recently as three years ago, others over ten. But we had kept in touch – via e mail, via LinkedIn and via other friends’ gatherings.
So what would we talk about?
Families, what we were now doing (Charities, Voluntary work, new business ventures, local community involvement), some common issues, some relating to age!
But the main component was “The Big Corporation”.

Years ago I felt I used to attend many weddings, christenings, birthday celebrations – in fact any excuse for a family gathering, a party.
We used to catch up and exchange stories, the highs and the lows and re-establish contact.
The gaps between events were relatively short because the number of events was high.
It was never a problem recognising people as they came into the hall, the reception area, the living room even for the smaller gatherings.
Small children became youngsters, became teenagers, became parents – the wheel of life continued unabated.

What is all this fuss about networking?
Networking groups, clubs, sites and events – just another excuse to get out and chat, have a few drinks and meet some people who might want to buy what you have to offer?
Why not just call it connecting up, finding out more about people and let’s be clear – if you use these gatherings to just sell you may find the gestation period is longer than you could possibly think!
